Debbie has been teaching fifth grade for almost ten years. She is a very energetic and a highly effective teacher. However, she is not technologically savvy. Her philosophy is “if it isn’t broke, don’t try to fix it”. Last year, Debbie’s school purchased ELMOs or document cameras for all of the teachers to use inside their classrooms. Instead of using the ELMO, Debbie is still using her overhead projector. If no one takes the time to show Debbie how to use the document camera, it will stay in the box inside her classroom collecting dust. According to Driscoll (2005) John Keller’s ARCS model stands for attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. To motivate my co-worker to embrace new technologies, I need to show her the importance of these technologies and how they are beneficial to her as well as her students. I will need to show Debbie the appropriate steps on how to use the equipment. By doing this, it will build her confidence to want to pursue the use of new technologies.

Where do you think her satisfaction would come from with using this new technology? Do you think she would find this really worth it in the end?
ReplyDeleteEllen,
DeleteI think Debbie's main concern is not being taught how to use the document camera. Once she learned how to use it, she was fine with it. Sometimes people show resistant because they just don't know.
I really enjoyed reading your post and I like the scenario you presented based on your colleague. I believe you ideas to motivate Debbie are spot on. Just like John Keller's ARCS model states, when people do not feel like the technology is RELEVANT to them then it does not get their ATTENTION. Without these two components of the model, Debbie will never reap the benefits of confidence and satisfaction.
ReplyDeleteProper training and understanding of the technology will allow Debbie to understand how the technology is relevant to her and how it will be beneficial to her and her students.
Ellen, I do believe Debbie would find this technology worth learning in the end. Most document cameras have an option to take photos. Debbie will most likely be able to take photos of documents and any other resources she has to display at any time during any class. This will allow Debbie to display documents by clicking on them, rather than going to the camera and actually removing and displaying each document. She will also be able to take photos of resources brought in by students to use each year.
What are document cameras?
ReplyDeleteDocument corners are devices used to display images. It's similar to an overhead projector minus the transparencies. You can place just about anything under the camera and it'll will display the image on the screen with the use of a LCD projector.
DeleteI meant to say cameras instead of corners.
